Glossary
27 terms used across ATS-1 and our guides, defined in plain language.
Terms
- Allostasis
- The idea that the body anticipates demands and adjusts, at a cost; tagged Model in ATS-1. Related: Homeostasis, Plane
- Autocorrelation
- How strongly a measure relates to its own previous value; lag-1 autocorrelation compares each day with the day before. Related: Critical slowing down, Early-warning signals
- Baseline
- A person's own reference period: 28 days rolling, with at least 14 valid days. Related: State Index, Robust z-score
- Coherence
- The strength of within-person coupling across planes; descriptive, never "better". See Coherence. Related: Plane, Resilience
- Conformance level
- One of three ATS-1 levels: conformant data, conformant model, endpoint-checked. See conformance. Related: Closed protocol, Preregistration
- Critical slowing down
- Slower recovery from small disturbances as a system nears a shift. Related: Early-warning signals, Autocorrelation
- Early-warning signals
- Statistical traces of critical slowing down, such as rising autocorrelation and variance. Related: State-Change Signal, Surrogate data
- Evidence tier
- Established, Model, Hypothesis or Inspiration. See evidence tiers. Related: Interpretive lexicon, Psychoid
- Experience sampling
- Short, repeated prompts during the day asking how a person feels in the moment. Related: WHO-5, State Index
- Half-life
- The time for half of a dip to recover: ln 2 divided by the recovery rate. Related: Resilience, Autocorrelation
- Homeostasis
- Regulation that keeps a system near its set points through feedback. Related: Allostasis, Resilience
- HRV
- Heart-rate variability: the variation in time between heartbeats. Related: lnRMSSD, Resilience
- IEEE 1752.1
- The IEEE 2021 standard for open mobile health data on sleep and physical activity. Related: HRV, Conformance level
- Interpretive lexicon
- Jungian terms ATS-1 keeps for discussion only; no output computes or displays them. Related: Psychoid, Evidence tier
- lnRMSSD
- The natural logarithm of RMSSD, a standard short-term HRV measure. Related: HRV, State Index
- Metabolic Balance
- The slope of smoothed body mass over at least 28 days; descriptive, never a target. Related: Coherence, Baseline
- Psychoid
- Jung's term for a level neither purely mental nor purely physical; ATS-1's inspiration for Plane II, never evidence. Related: Plane, Interpretive lexicon
- Preregistration
- Registering an endpoint publicly before analysis, as Level 3 requires. Related: Conformance level, Closed protocol
- Resilience
- Recovery speed, as a rate and a half-life. See Resilience. Related: Half-life, HRV
- State-Change Signal
- A graded research estimate of slowing recovery; never an alert. See the index. Related: Early-warning signals, Surrogate data
- State Index
- Today against the person's own baseline. See the index. Related: Baseline, Robust z-score
- Surrogate data
- Simulated series that keep a model's structure, used to test whether a trend could arise by chance. Related: State-Change Signal, Autocorrelation
- WHO-5
- The five-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index, scored 0 to 100 and free to use. Related: Experience sampling, Plane
- Closed protocol
- Uses ATS-1 defaults without change, so results are comparable across studies. Related: Open protocol, Conformance level
- Open protocol
- Allows disclosed variations; results are not compared with closed ones. Related: Closed protocol, Conformance level
- Plane
- One of three measurement levels of a person: physical, psychoid, micro. Related: Homeostasis, Psychoid
- Robust z-score
- A standardized score using the median and MAD instead of the mean and standard deviation. Related: Baseline, State Index
